The sun's rays are strongest between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Suggest different times for outdoor activities to avoid these peak sunlight hours.  Encourage your children to play outside in the morning and early-evening hours when the sun’s rays are less intense and less likely to damage your skin.  Swimming is best after 4:00 because it is usually warmer but with less intense sunlight.  Always have a variety of indoor activities available for your children to participate in during the day.

These also happen to be times for children’s summer vacations. UV radiation is, on average, 3 or higher during the months of March through October in Colorado, and experts recommend sun protection be required when the Index is 3 (moderate) or higher1.

Children’s exposure to UV rays could be reduced up to 60% if they avoided the sun during peak sun intensity hours2. Whenever possible, try to schedule outdoor activities for your family in the early morning or late afternoon.

Did you know?

An easy way to know the UV intensity you face daily is to check the UV Index. The UV Index is a joint effort between the National Weather Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. It provides a daily forecast of the expected intensity of the sun for numerous U.S. cities. The Index predicts UV intensity on a scale of 0 to 11+, where 0 means minimal risk and 11+ means an extreme risk of overexposure. The UV Index is published online and on the weather page of many daily newspapers.
