No unlimited tanning at Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness in New York has agreed to pay the state of New York $50,000 in penalties regarding the misleading tanning advertisments that claimed the unlimited use of tanning beds to premier membership as healthy or safe. According to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, Planet Fitness clubs have failed to warn members about the risks of melanoma and other non-melanoma skin cancer when using a tanning bed or have stated that LED lights provide health benefits, which according to the FDA, LED lights are only for cosmetic purposes. Maria Sharapova Reimagines Sun Safety in Schools with SUPERGOOP!

Tennis player, Maria Sharapova has recently launched Project BlackDot.org, a campaign that advocates for sun protection in American schools by signing permission slips for children to use sunscreen in school on November 9, 2015. ASDS Five Goals for Combating Skin Cancer

The Deputy Surgeon General Boris Lushniak, M.D., M.P.H. set five goals for cancer prevention as a national priority back in 2014. They were 1) increase opportunities for sun protection in outdoor settings, like healthy skin campaigns and skin cancer prevention campaigns for sports, 2) provide individuals with the information they need to make informed, healthy choices about UV exposure, 3) promote policies that advance the national goal of skin cancer prevention, 4) reduce harms from indoor tanning, and 5) strengthen research, monitoring and evaluation related to the prevention of skin cancer. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) has laid out their specific initiatives for each goal in August 2015. Click here to read about the specifics to help yourself prevent sun damage.
